…or are there others who think it would be a good idea, just to be absolutely above-board about all this, to openly strip-search the guy looking for bruises, and if they’re found, ceremoniously transfer him from the care of American guards to that of Iraqi guards, who will surely be much kinder to him after all he’s done for them?
Is it just me…

Definitely Not Just You, Eve… In Fact, Just Such An Event, If Televised, Would Be Reason Enough For Me To Turn The TV Back On… Momentarily, Anyway

I think it’s sad it’s gotten to this point. Once a country gives up the moral high ground on torture and the Geneva Convention, even the wildest claims from the earth’s lowest scum start to gain more credibility — unfortunately, instead of saying “we’re better than Saddam because we don’t secretly imprison our opponents and torture and kill them”, all Saddam’s captors can say is “we’re better because we don’t secretly imprison our opponents and torture and kill them nearly as often“. It’s a harder distinction for people outside North America to sympathize with.
David,
> we’re better than Saddam
Is that what you think this is all about? The idea that being able to say we’re better or we do things different, or anything like that? Huh, guess I missed that rally… I always thought it was about not letting an evil Dictator, Dictate the way things are going to work from this point forward. People spend all this time and effort pointing at this “lets show the world we’re better than that” and have lost site of the fact that we past that point somewhere between the first and 100,000th innocent victims in which were beaten, raped, tortured, killed, buried in mass graves, all left rot while Saddam stood in front of American cameras’s and insisted that it was he he gave Irag everything it had… the milk they drank, the food they ate, the beds they slept in, all of it… He gave that to them… at least, so he thinks.
David, this isn’t about us being better than that. This is about not letting the murders continue. Its about not letting the brutal and horrific beating and rapes continue. Is about putting an end to the misery of MILLIONS and MILLIONS of human lives who are still in fear of Saddam, and will most likely continue to be in fear until he is put to death for his crimes. Only then will they be given a chance to heal.
Lets stop pretending this is about anything else. Lets not lose site of what is MOST important. I don’t believe we should be torturing or beating, or in other ways taking on the savage nature in which we suggest as one of the primary reasons Saddam is on trial. But he sure does look healthy to me for a supposedly tortured and beaten victim.
Probably makeup, right?
Why is the world attempting to protect a murderor? Why is the world trying to point the finger of torture at the United States when in fact the one guilty of torturing 10’s of 1000’s of people is the one we need to be pointing the finger at. What about the victims of his beatings and torturings? Shouldnt they have a say in this to? Or is the world going to act as their dictator as well.
If truth be told… At the moment, the only reason Saddam Hussein is alive and well, is because the US has kept him alive and well. Do you believe he would have a better shot at staying bruise free if he was handed over to the Iraqi military as Eve suggested.
Maybe we should find out. Would that make the world feel better. Well guess what.. This isnt about “the World”! This is about the healing of the Iraqi people. They need this trial. They were the ones that were beaten. They were the ones that were raped. They were the ones that were tortured.
They are the ones that need the healing. Not you. Them.
